MAY RUN:
May 12, 2007 - Complete
Tim's Farewell Run
WHERE: Olallie Lake National Scenic
Area
MEET:
KFC in Clackamas
7am <--- CLICK
CB Channel: 4
GMRS: 20/20
RUN LEADER:
Terahex
RUN PLAN:
I want like to drive
up Clackamas River and
around
Olallie Lake Scenic Area. There are lots of
little lakes up there and a great view of Mt. Jefferson. Then if time
permits we take some of the National Forest roads over to
Silver Falls State Park. From the maps it
doesn't look like much of a technical run except maybe for the road up
Mount Beachie. It looks steep with a few tight
switch backs. I thought I add a few stops for
Geocaching. With just a few GPS units, we
could get the group into the right area and then everyone can join in
the search. I would like to shoot for late May (Sat 5/26/2007), but it
might still be too early for some of the NF roads to be open.
The number of Geocaches might change. I just picked the caches along the
desired route, so I need to fine tune them down to the easier finds.
DIFFICULTY LEVEL:
Unknown. Be prepared to do some wheeling.

FJ Dyno Day & BBQ Bash!
WHERE: PDXTuning
MEET: 8am - 5pm
ADDRESS:
16580 S.W.
72nd Avenue
Portland, OR 97224
IINFORMATION: No,
this is not a run, but a gathering of sorts. PDXTuning, the absolute
name in engine tuning and more for Subaru's in the Northwest has now
added a 4-wheel dynamometer that is FJ-friendly. PDXTuning is hosting an
FJ Dyno Day for anyone who wants to come. This event is open to anyone
with an FJ. You do NOT have to be a member of or be associated with the
NorthWest FJ Cruiser Club to attend. However, the NWFJCC is supporting
this event.
Place YOUR truck on the dyno and see what power it really
has. Learn how the ECU know what fuel you are running and how it
compensates. Learn how much power you lose running regular gas. Learn
that you do not need to run premium and your engine is safe.
Come on down and
have a free lunch!!!
Three runs for $30.
It does not get any cheaper than that!!!

Road Closure Information
There are no special permits, tags or
licenses required for traveling on Washington's forest service roads.
The only requirement is that you drive a legally licensed vehicle (which
state you are licensed in does not matter).
As always, it's Safety First, pack it in,
pack it out and leave it cleaner than when you arrived. If you have
special time restrictions that may require to leave before the run is
completed that will need to be discussed with the group BEFORE the run.
One of the basic rules is we run in as a group and we run out as a
group, but exceptions are possible as long as everyone agrees.
PRE-RUN:
Bernd and
I met early in Washougal and then headed out to Stevenson. The area we
will be running is actually out of Carson, a few miles down the road
from Stevenson.
_small.JPG)
Anyway, we popped
onto the first dirt road we saw and played back in there for a few
hours. Snow starts getting thick at about 2100 ft. The forest is pretty
dense so GPS rarely works. Paper maps are the only way to go. And, of
course, cell phones are of no use.
The
snow is old, hard, crunchy and icy. "Forging" trails is all but
impossible as your truck just crunches down into the hard snow and gets
stuck. All the trails at the higher elevations are closed, but the lower
elevation trails are fun and the scenery is just gorgeous.
There
are alot of fallen trees. Most are cleared to the sides of the roads,
but there are many roads blocked.
I may consider
buying a small chainsaw to help clear some roads. In the meantime, Bernd
and I are scouring the TOPO maps for some more, lower elevation trails._small.JPG)
It will be a fun,
very easy, beautiful adventure run. We have several first-timers coming
out so this will give them an opportunity to see a little of what your
FJ can so with little risk and nary a pin stripe. But, Bernd and I will
see if we can mix it up a little to get some adrenaline going!
NOTE: Please
print all four links above as that is what we be using to run these
roads. |
